The organ at St Andrew's Anglican Church in Epsom has had a couple of consoles in it's history and some expansion over the years. This latest iteration has replaced the (already second hand) console from 2002 with a brand new Makin Windermere three manual organ.
The standard Windermere is a 45 stop, three manual and 32 note pedal organ in traditional English style and voicing, but we made some additions and extensions to this basic specification to match 100% to the pipe organ plus we have added a “west” Antiphonal which reproduces digitally, the pipe Great Principal Chorus (8,4, 2,2/3,2 Mixture) plus Great Trumpet.
Also included is a fiery Fanfare Trumpet playable from the new Choir Organ and (if required) by virtue of a top note “melody” coupler on the Great.
The console is connected to the pipes and digital voice / amplification, by a Cat 6 data cable which reduces the traditional bulk of wiring required in such a situation by almost 100%.
Organist Stephen Hamilton Writes
The hybrid organ sounds like a pipe organ, without question, which was the plan, but with a (deliberately subtle) enhancement to the previous pipe organ sound. The organ has more flexibility, a greater range of ranks (now over three manuals) and an antiphonal division at the west end. Gone are the regular tuning problems; not to mention the fabulous new console, which is a joy to play. The organ specification now has widened repertoire possibilities. An outstanding success story, thanks to Makin and Keyboard Music Systems expertise on the ground in New Zealand without which the concept or the delivery of the outcome would not have been possible.
